BYLI Science and Innovation challenge
The BYLI Science and Innovation challenge is a science exhibition competition that encourages high school students to identify problems within their communities and find scientific solutions. The goal of the challenge is to foster innovation and encourage young people to think creatively and innovatively in a competitive space. The competition calls out to student doing Mathematics, Physical Science, Life science and other related sciences who are between grades 10-12.
Schools around Vhembe are invited to nominate competent students to represent the school at the regional competition. The nominated students must conduct thorough scientific research on a chosen solution which they will present before adjudicators for the title of - Young Scientist of the year.
The Young scientist of the year if fortuned with the opportunity to attend the London International Youth Science Forum on a full scholarship. LIYSF is a two weeks event held annually between July and August at Imperial College London. The forum exposes the learner to lectures and demonstrations from leading scientist, visits to industrial sites, research centres, scientific institutions and organizations including world class laboratories. Furthermore, the forum gives the learner an opportunity to meet peers from around the world and learn about developing scientific initiatives and technologies used worldwide.
Nomination criteria
The student must be between grade 10-12
The student must have obtained an average of above 65% for each Physical Sciences and Mathematics.
The student must have a combined average of 70% for all the 7 subjects they are taking
The student must come from a disadvantaged school i.e Quintiles 1-4 schools.
YOSA travel scholarship
Young Scientists for Africa (‘YoSA’) is a UK registered charity committed to motivating, developing and sponsoring scientific interest in pre-University students in Africa. As part of this aim, YoSA is offering the opportunity of a scholarship to attend the annual London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF). The scholarship, named the Clare Elwell Scholarship, is directed towards young Africans with a noted interest in science for whom other financial support would not normally be available.

YOSA does not cover the following
Student’s transport to the local airport
Stipend
Visa and passport applications
The student is personally responsible for raising funds for these.
London International Youth Science Forum
The London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) is a two-week residential student event held at Imperial College London & the royal geographical society, with lecture demonstrations from leading scientists, visits to world-class laboratories and universities combined with cultural interaction, with 500 students aged 16-21 years old from 70 countries across the world.
The student will be expected to present their project at the LIYSF Science Bazaar – Poster Project Evening.

Sharing the experience
Upon their return from the forum, the student will be expected to do a presentation for fellow students at BYLI Innovation camp in September.
